Join the fastest growing youth sport in America... Lacrosse! Carroll Manor Lacrosse started with a single U9 Boys Lacrosse team in the Spring of 2009. This season will have Boys teams at the U9 and U11 levels as well as a clinic for younger kids.
- Why did we start a new program? Carroll Manor had been approached several times about starting a lax program, but the catalyst was a handful of kids that really wanted to play and few volunteers willing to launch the program. Tuscarora HS didn't really have a feeder program for boys lacrosse so we're expanding to fill that need with the goal (no pun intended) of having programs at all levels within 2 years.
- What are the age groups? To play U9 lacrosse the player must have been under 9 years old as of this past December 31, 2009 - typically 2nd and 3rd graders. To play U11 lacrosse the player must have been under 11 years old as of this past December 31, 2009 - typically 3rd and 4th graders. Our Clinic is for kindergarten and 1st graders - boys and girls - and is low-key, fun-oriented introduction to the sport.
- What about girls teams and the older boys? The CMLAX Clinic is the perfect venue for younger (K - 1st grade) girls to get a fun, low-key introduction to the game. For the older girls (2nd grade and up), Carroll Manor Lacrosse has a sister program in Frederick County Lacrosse Club (www.fredericklax.com) who runs the girls feeder program for Tuscarora High School. Until Carroll Manor Lax has expanded in to the older age groups, we're referring U13 and U15 players over to our friends at Spires Lacrosse.
- How many players on the team? U9 lacrosse plays 7v7 (1 goalie, 2 defense, 2 midfielders and 2 attackers) so the team will consist of 12-14 players. U11 lacrosse plays 10v10 (1 goalie, 3 defense, 3 midfielders and 3 attackers) so the team will consist of 15-20 players. Please sign up ASAP as players will be placed on the team in order of registration. We will not take more than 14 players on U9 or more than 20 players on U11 as we want to make sure everyone gets a lot of playing time.
- Where do Carroll Manor Lacrosse players come from? We welcome kids from any school - public, private and homeschooled. As the feeder program for Tuscarora High School, we draw players from Ballenger Creek Middle, Crestwood Middle, Ballenger Creek Elementary, Carroll Manor Elementary, Orchard Grove Elementary, Tuscarora Elementary, and Lincoln Elementary.
- What league will the teams play in? Carroll Manor Lax is a member of the Western Maryland Youth Lacrosse Conference (WMYLC). You can read about the conference at www.wmylc.com.
- When does the season start? Practices will start late February / early March depending on the weather. The team will play 8-10 games starting the third week in March. The WMYLC tournament is typically held the weekend after Memorial Day.
- When and where are practices and games? The clinic and U9 teams Teams will practice at Tuscarora Elementary School. The clinic will be held on Tuesday evenings for an hour and the U9 team will practice on Tuesdays and Thursdays for 90 minutes. Practices for the U11 team will be Mondays and Thursdays from 6-7:30pm with the location still to be determined. U9 and U11 games are usually Saturdays.
- What equipment do the players need? Each player will need to provide their own equipment although Carroll Manor Lax will arrange for an equipment supplier to come out and fit the players. Expect to spend between $150 and $200 on equipment, including a lacrosse helmet, a mouthpiece (must be colored not clear or white), shoulder pads, arm pads, gloves, a Boys LAX stick, an athletic supporter/cup, rib pads and cleats. CMLAX will have a limited supply of rental equipment available on a first come, first served basis. Clinic players only need to obtain a lacrosse stick.
- How much are the registration fees? Total fees for U9 and U11 is $160 divided as follows: $25 US Lacrosse membership, $75 CMLAX registration and $60 uniform cost. The CMLAX fee covers WMYLC fees, referee fees, insurance, etc. These fees are in line with what other local lacrosse organizations charge. The total fee for the K-1 clinic is $50 with $25 for US Lacrosse membership and $25 for CMLAX registration.
- Why does CMLAX require US Lacrosse membership? Carroll Manor Lacrosse is being handled through the US Lacrosse registration system and is not integrated with the CMAA registration system. We choose to use the USL system for three primary reasons: 1) USL membership includes coach and player insurance, 2) the online registration system is free to use for member organizations and 3) CMLAX supports the USL mission.
- One last question... Is lacrosse really the fastest growing youth sport in America? Yup. Over the last 10 years, lacrosse has grown faster than any other sport played at the high school and college levels. In 2008, more people attended the NCAA Div I Men's Lacrosse Championship than the NCAA Div I Men's Basketball Championship!
